PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a travel control system with high reliability capable of correctly determining the type of a road even in various road conditions and switching a vehicle following distance control mode accordingly. SOLUTION: The vehicle following distance control mode is switched by determining the type of a road in the vehicle running condition by means of the technology described below singly or by combination. (1) Detection result of grade of road and grade of road map data of a navigation system are compared, to thereby determine the gates of superhighways. (2) The gates of superhighways are determined by recognizing a lane marker by an image- processing camera. (3) The type of a road is determined by data obtained by communication system between road and vehicle such as a road beacon system. By using the above technology singly or by combination, a highly reliable system capable of recognizing the type of a road correctly even in a complicated road condition, changing contents of control accordingly, can be provided. |
