PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure an optimum vehicle following distance responding to the shift of a speed change position. SOLUTION: A traveling control system for a vehicle comprises an engine brake force estimating section 23 for detecting an engine brake force in a case where a throttle is estimated to be fully closed under a current driving state, and a vehicle following distance setting section 25 for calculating a target vehicle following distance, the calculation is based on the engine brake force detected by the engine brake force estimating section 23. The vehicle following distance setting section 25 reduces the target vehicle following distance when the engine brake force is large, and increases the target vehicle following distance when the engine brake force is small.
