PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable faster warm-up of an engine and a catalyst, and thereby reduce an exhaust amount. SOLUTION: During a certain period of time after engine start, the load of an electrical generator driven by an engine is increased and then, air intake is throttled to reduce an intake manifold pressure to a target pressure. These processes enable the faster warm-up of the engine and catalyst, and thereby the exhaust amount is reduced. Such a method is particularly suitable for a diesel engine connected to an oxidizing catalyst.
