A FIRE RETARDANT WALLCOVERING

A fire retardant wallcovering comprises a fire-resistant sheet to each side of which is adhered an outer layer of paper by means of an adhesive layer. The adhesive layers comprise a fire-retardant paste and are applied so as to be continuous and coextensive with each adjacent fire-resistant sheet and paper layers to provide a unitary laminated wallcovering. The wallcovering can then be used to encapsulate surfaces which have been overpainted many times using conventional surface paints to provide a fire-retardant wallcovering without the old paint layers having to be removed. The fire-resistant layer preferably comprises either a metal foil or an absorbent fibrous sheet which has been impregnated with a fire-retardant material.
