Card reader has slot unit for card, and contact unit (16) with rectangular frame. Slot unit and contact unit are fastened to opposite sides of machine housing wall. Device also has electronic circuit board (28) with at least one memory unit, attached to contact unit. Separate, rectangular frame (26) of elastic, resilient plastic material is provided. This at least partly engages frame (18) of contact unit and is connected to frame by releasable snap fitting. Separate frame (26) receives, in form fitting arrangement, circuit board at small distance above contact unit.
