System in which units are placed at suitable points in traffic networks for identification of vehicle specific data. The resulting data is encrypted to prevent interference. In locations where vehicles are being searched for, e.g. in public authority locations any corresponding vehicle data is also encrypted. Comparison of stored data related to vehicles and measured data from units in the traffic network can be carried out centrally, locally or in a local server so that if a match is generated a corresponding reaction can be triggered. Identification data for motor vehicles includes: conventional or electronic number plates, vehicle color and make, etc.
