The device consists of an internal combustion engine (1) and a generator (2) coupled to the engine in a heat and sound insulated housing (11). The generator is connected to the domestic electrical supply of the building and/or the public supply (3) and an arrangement (4,5) is provided for using the waste heat produced by the internal combustion engine, generator and engine exhaust gases. The insulated housing of the engine and generator is externally closed air tight and fitted with an internal cooling circuit.
