The method of polishing a surface of a material composed of at least two components, each being present in or on the surface to be polished, includes polishing the surface with at least one of a polishing wheel and a suspension at a predetermined working temperature at which erosion of the at least two different components is compensated, because of different thermal expansion properties of the at least two different components and so that surface roughness of the surface is minimized at an application temperature of the material. When the erosion properties of the components are the same and the thermal expansion properties are different the working temperature corresponds to the later application temperature.
