<p>An optical apparatus (10) for manipulating an optical signal a, includes a first optic area (11) having a first birefringence and a second optic area (13) having a second birefringence. A signal generator (16) produces the optical signal a for direction through the first optic area (11) and the second optic area (13). The first birefringence of the first optic area (11) is substantially equal to and opposite the second birefringence of the second optic area (13), such that the polarization mode dispersion occurring in the optical signal a as it traverses through the first optic area (11) is substantially reversed as the optical signal a traverses the second optic area (13). Methods of compensating for polarization mode dispersion in an optical apparatus (10) are also provided.</p> |
