PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface galvanized steel sheet which does not include inseparable components such as Cu, and has an adequate rust resistance on end faces even of a thick sheet of 1.6 mm or thicker. SOLUTION: This surface treated steel sheet comprises, by mass%, 0.2% or less C, 2.0% or less Si, 3.5% or less Mn, 0.10% or less P, 0.02% or less S, 0.005-0.10% Al, and 0.5-10.0% Cr, and the balance Fe with unavoidable impurities, has an area ratio of a martensite structure of 3% or less to a cross section area of the steel sheet, and a galvanizing layer formed on at least one side of the steel sheet, with a coated Zn amount of 5 g/m<2> or more per one side.
