PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engraving device which is capable of inhibiting the generation of broken pieces or burrs when a material to be shaved which is composed of an original printing plate or the like, is engraved by a cutting tool, and an engraving method using this device. SOLUTION: This engraving device 1 comprises a pair of supporting members 3, a vibrator 4 fixed to the supporting members 3, a cutting tool 6 fastened to one end of the vibrator 4, a barrel part 7 fixed to the center of the vibrator 4, horizontal planes 9 and perpendicular faces 10 provided on the side of the barrel part 7, a piezoelectric element 11 fixed to the mutually opposed horizontal planes 9 and a piezoelectric element 11 fixed to the mutually opposed perpendicular faces 10. Specified voltage is supplied to the piezoelectric elements 11 and 12 respectively from a control part (non-illustrated) to displace each of the piezoelectric elements 11 and 12. Consequently, the vibrator 4 is made to generate a flexural vibration and this flexural vibration is compounded to vibrate the cutting tool 6 elliptically. In turn, the cutting tool 6 comes into intermittent contact with the material to be shaved 8 and thus the engraving of the material 8 is achieved. In this way, it is possible to reduce a working resistance and inhibit the generation of the broken pieces, burrs or the like.
