A transmission device has two toothed components (4,8), with end faces (18,20), which face each other immediately before the toothed sections (14,16) are engaged. At least one of the end faces has a protective plate (22) at least during assembly, to prevent damage to the toothed sections. The plate consists of a material, which is less hard than that of the teeth, e.g. plastic, or an under-cooled fluid, e.g. lubricant. The transmission device is a planetary gear, and the protective plate is for the end face of a sun wheel (8). This is located on the pinion shaft (10) of the drive engine, and is fitted into the sun wheel during assembly.
