PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which has excellent mass productivity and which is capable of favorable display without depending on the brightness of the ambient light. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device, each pixel region of a plurality of regions has a reflecting region and a transmitting region and the liquid crystal layer is made of a liquid crystal material having positive dielectric anisotropy. The device has a first polarizing element disposed on the opposite side of a first substrate to the liquid crystal layer, a second polarizing element disposed on the opposite side of a second substrate to the liquid crystal layer, a first phase difference compensating element disposed between the first polarizing element and the liquid crystal layer, and a second phase difference compensating element disposed between the second polarizing element and the liquid crystal layer. The twist angle θt of the liquid crystal layer is in the range of >=0 deg. and <=90 deg.. The retardation of the liquid crystal layer is independently optimized in the reflecting region and in the transmitting region. |
