Fungal lanostanes (I) are useful as inhibitors of 3 alpha -hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and cyclooxygenase I and II. Fungal lanostanes of formula (I) selected from tumulosinic acids and derivatives derived from Poria cocos, quercinic acids derived from Daedalea quercina, hebelomic acids derived from Hebeloma senescens, polyporic acids derived from Polyporus betulinus, fasciculols and fasciculic acids derived from Hypholoma fascicularis and ganoderic acids derived from Ganoderma lucidum are used as inhibitors of 3 alpha -hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and cyclooxygenase I and II. R1-R5 = groups occurring in the various plant extracts described above. Bond b may be a double bond provided a and c are single bonds; and bonds a and c together may be double bonds provided b is a single bond.
