Process for producing a metal foamed body from a metal powder comprises introducing at least one gas or gas mixture into the metal powder to produce a mixture, compacting the mixture, and foaming the mixture by heating. Independent claims are also included for a metal foamed body produced by the above process and for the use of a gas or gas mixture as a propellant in a metal powder to produce a metal foamed body. Preferred Features: The gas or gas mixture is introduced by high energy grinding under gas pressure. The gas mixture contains argon, krypton and/or helium, or can be nitrogen, oxygen or hydrogen. The metal powder is an especially high-melting point alloy.
