There is disclosed a cryptographic apparatus in which an exponentiation is used, the apparatus comprising an exponentiator arranged whereby the exponentiation is carried out using addition chains with at least one divisor, and the addition chain is selected randomly. A cryptographic method and corresponding apparatus and method for communication is also disclosed.
