The invention relates to means for dying keratin fibers, particularly human hair, which contain, in a cosmetically acceptable carrier, at least one p-phenylenediamine derivative of formula (I), whereby: A represents a branched or unbranched alkylene group with 1 to 6 carbon atoms, which can optionally carry one or more substituents selected from hydroxy group(s) and halogen atom(s); X represents an optionally substituted imidazolyl radical; R<1>, R<2> and R<3>, independent of one another, represent a hydrogen atom, a C1 to C4 alkyl group, a C1 to C4 monohydroxyalkyl group or a C2 to C6 polyhydroxyalkyl group, and; R<4> and R<5>, independent of one another, represent a hydrogen atom, a C1 to C4 alkyl group, a C1 to C4 alkoxy group, a C1 to C4 monohydroxyalkyl group, a C2 to C4 polyhydroxyalkyl group or a halogen atom. The inventive developer constituents are characterized by exhibiting intensive color results with excellent fastness to perspiration and cold wave fastness. The loss of color of colorations combined with customary colorant intermediate products is shifted somewhat bluish compared to colorings with p-toluylenediamine.
