A method for allocating the resources of a base station amongst a plurality of wireless units. The method includes transmitting or receiving data, voice or the like over a shared wireless channel by varying a time span and/or bandwidth of the transmission. The time span and/or bandwidth may be varied as a function of a number of considerations, including the channel quality of the wireless unit receiving the downlink transmission.
