PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for producing by a biological transformation technique (1R,2R)-1,2-trans-cyclohexanediol which is usable as an optically active intermediate for synthesizing pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals, or as an optical resolution agent, or as a raw material for column chromatography carriers for isolating optically active substances. SOLUTION: This method comprises subjecting cyclohexene oxide as starting material to incubation treatment in the presence of a strain belonging to the genus Aspergillus niveus having the ability to transform the starting material to the (1R,2R)-1,2-trans-cyclohexanediol or a cultured cellular preparation thereof and oxygen, and then collecting the objective (1R,2R)-1,2-trans-cyclohexanediol from the incubation treatment liquid.
