A data processor has a conditional write operation the result of which is sent to a register. When non-write conditions are met the result is sent to a trash register, other wise it goes to the normal data register. In this way the power signature associated with whether a register write does or does not occur has been masked. The data register could be part of a bank of registers and the trash register could be part of the bank such that the trash register is unmapped to a register number, so that the trash register can not be specified by a register specifying value. The result could come from a result data generating circuit which is part of a processor core and the processing instructions could include conditional data processing instructions, which are not executed when predetermined conditions are detected. Also if the predetermined conditions are detected then the results of the conditional data processing instructions are written to the trash register. Writing to the trash register can be disabled by a trash register control signal, which could be stored in a system configuration register. |
