PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for breeding a new variety of dogwood having a high planting density because of its tree standing upright and its branches not extending much, easily cultivated and controlled, having branches hard to be snapped off by snow, and excellent as a decorative plant because of its flowers being large and in bloom even on the lower branches. SOLUTION: The method for breeding a new variety of dogwood comprises the following process: continuously observing characteristics in chance seedling of Cloudnine (a garden variety of dogwood) grown to have a tree height of about 2 m, selecting a branches whose middle portions slanting at 25 deg.-35 deg. to the trunk at the middle portion of the stock and bearing large flowers, growing the selected one by cutting, fixing the grown one in a growing area, raising the fixed one to obtain a dogwood having branches whose middle portions slanting at 25 deg.-35 deg. to the trunk at the middle portion of each of the 6-year-old stock, and bract-containing inflorescences of 11 to 14 cm in size.
