First and second members (10,20) are joined by friction stir welding. A portion of at least the first member (10), to which portion load is applied during the friction stir welding, is supported during the welding on a counter-support (200) provided at a rear side of the first member through a removable backing member (210) arranged within a space at least partly enclosed by the first member. The backing member is removed from said space after the welding. This method avoids the need for an integral member to support the welding load.
