Space creating instrument, which is to be introduced into a human pharynx, comprises a spacer, which is active in the area between the tongue and the rear side of the pharynx. The spacer comprises a curved follower part having an end, and which matches the contour of the tongue. Space creating instrument (700), which is to be introduced into a human pharynx, comprises: (a) a basic component (702) having a curved insertion part with an insertion end, which can be introduced into an area between the tongue and the rear side of the pharynx; and (b) a spacer, which is active in the area between the tongue and the rear side of the pharynx. The spacer comprises a curved follower part having an end. The follower part in the introduction position of the spacer with respect to the basic component, extends along the insertion part. It matches the contour of the tongue. The basic component and the spacer, in the introduction position of the spacer with respect to the basic component are introduced into the area between the tongue and the rear side of the pharynx. After the basic component and the spacer are introduced, they are displaced away from one another in relative terms in the area between the tongue and the rear side of the pharynx, into a holding-open position. An Independent claim is also included for a method of using the space creating instrument, comprising: (i) positioning the instrument in an introduction position by guiding the follower part along the tongue and into the pharynx; and (ii) moving the basic component and the spacer with respect to one another until a holding-open position of the instrument is reached.
