An article of footwear is constructed from an outsole (104) to which there is attached an upper (102). The outsole (104) is provided with an upstanding sidewall (114) and adjoining lip (118) which form an outwardly projecting edge (120). The upper (102) is attached to the outer surface of the lip (118) adjacent the edge (120) by stitching and/or adhesive bonding. The outsole (104) defines a hollow interior for receiving footwear components such as lining material, an insole (132) and the like.
