METHOD AND MEANS FOR PROCESSING BUTT WELDS

A method and machine (10) for deburring the burr which is formed when wires (12 and 14) are butt welded is disclosed. The machine (10) comprises a deburring head (18) which has a pair of opposed deburring rollers (54 and 62) mounted thereon. Each of the rollers (54 and 62) has a milled surface formed therein. A linkage (70 and 72) is connected to the rollers (54 and 62) to cause the rollers (54 and 62) to rotate when the linkage (70 and 72) is moved between first and second positions. When the linkage (70 and 72) is in its first position, the milled surfaces of the rollers (54 and 62) face one another to enable the wires (12 and 14) and burr (16) to be positioned therebetween. As the linkage (70 and 72) moves to its second position, the circumferences of the rollers (54 and 62) engage the burr (16) to roll out the same, thereby providing a substantially smooth, cylindrical surface where the burr (16) was located. The method of deburring is also disclosed.
