PURPOSE: A portable computer system and a controlling method thereof are provided to make the portable computer system operate in a maximum performance mode without modifying a main circuit in case that a high capacity battery is used. CONSTITUTION: The system comprises a power supply(9), a battery detecting part(7) outputting a detection result to a microcomputer(5) by detecting a sort of power supply source selected by the power supply(9), the microcomputer(5) applying an operation mode signal to a CPU(3) according to a signal from the battery detecting part(7), a system bus(1) transferring the mode signal from the microcomputer(5), and the CPU(3) converting a mode according to the signal from the microcomputer(5). The CPU(3) controls an operation clock of the CPU(3) and the power supply according to a situation of the system. The microcomputer(5) applies the operation mode signal to the CPU(3) according to the detection result of the battery detecting part(7).
