PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display device which has wide viewing angle, enables bright display and is excellent in visibility. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal display device 20 is constituted in such a manner that a semi-transmissive and reflective layer 35 using cholesteric liquid crystal layers 34r, 34g, 34b which have a plurality of rugged parts and reflects at least one part of elliptic polarization having a prescribed rotation direction is disposed on the inner surface side of the lower substrate 23, an upper substrate side elliptic polarization incident means which makes the elliptic polarization incident from the upper substrate 24 side with respect to the liquid crystal layer 26 is disposed and the liquid crystal layer 26 inverts the polarity of incident elliptic polarization in either state of one side of the state that electric field is impressed and the state that no electric field is impressed, and does not change the polarity thereof in the state of the other side. |
