Forging.-A method of making a self-aligning bearing comprises forming. an inner.bearing member having a part-spherical surface, heat treating the member to harden it, placing it in a cylindrical race ring member, exerting substantial pressure simultaneously on the opposite ends of the ring in both axial and radial directions to force it into tight contact with the inner member and finally heat treating the assembly to bring the ring to substantially the same hardness as the inner member. The inner member 21 of the form shown in Fig. 4a is hardened and placed in a race member 22, Fig. 3a, which is then deformed as shown in Fig. 6a, machined as shown in Fig. 7 and hardened by heat treating the assembly. Both members are preferably of steel. Dies for compressing the member 22 on to the member 21 are shown in Figs. 9 and 9a. The upper die 44 has a cavity 45 with a partspherical wall 46 and a base 50 formed by a cylindrical block 49 held in position by a setscrew 48. The lower die has a similar partspherical wall 53 bounding a cavity through which projects a cylindrical ejector 52 having a reduced end 56 serving to position the assembly in the die. In a modification, the ring member is made narrower in order to avoid the machining of the ring after deformation about the inner member. |
