PURPOSE: A device and a method for controlling power consumption of a mobile communication terminal are provided to promptly turn on and off backlight of the mobile communication terminal, so as to eliminate unnecessary power consumption and extend a battery use time. CONSTITUTION: A controller(100) controls operations of a mobile communication terminal on the whole, controls backlight of a backlight part(200) to be turned on and off as a user inputs a light key of a light key input part(600), and generates current state display data to deliver the data to a displayer(300). The backlight part(200) includes a backlight lamp and power source, and turns on and off the backlight lamp under the control of the controller(100) to brighten or darken the displayer(300). The displayer(300) displays general current states of the mobile communication terminal for the confirmation of the user. A wireless signal transceiver(400) generally processes signals for wireless signal transceiving between the mobile communication terminal and a base station including the terminal. A character key input part(500) includes a plurality of numerical keys and function keys as an information input unit of the user, outputs inherent key data to the controller(100) according to the input of each key by the user. The light key input part(600) includes the predetermined light key, and outputs inherent key data to the controller(100) as the user inputs the light key to instruct the turn-on and turn-off of the backlight of the backlight part(200). And a storing part(700) stores a program necessary for operations of the mobile communication terminal therein.
