PURPOSE: A method for controlling operation of a reciprocating compressor is provided to prevent piston from colliding on a discharge valve. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises the steps of: a comparing step detecting present electric current impressed to a motor and terminal voltage of a switching element turned on/off by gate signal to compare data on fixed electric current and voltage with impressed electric current and terminal voltage apart by fixed number; and a piston stroke determining step determining that stroke of a piston gets larger than a location where TDC(Top Dead Center) is 0 when data pattern of the electric current and the voltage calculated in the comparing step is identical with preset electric current pattern and voltage pattern of the switching element.
