In order to implant expandable cylindrical vascular prostheses such as stents (2) or endoprostheses in stensoses, an instrument (1) is disclosed which comprises an outer tube (3) and an inner tube (4) which can be displaced relative to one another. The inner tube (4) is at least partially longitudinally slotted on the distal end (5) thereof and surrounds the stent (2) with said area comprising the longitudinal slot (6). In order to implant the stent (2), the outer tube (2) is retracted. The stent (2) then expands with the continuous retracting movement of the outer tube (3) and the inner tube (4) is pressed along the longitudinal slot (6). Implantation is terminated when the outer tube (4) is retracted along the entire length of the stent (2). The implantation process can be reversed by pushing the outer tube forward, as long as the stent has not fully left the instrument (1). The inner tube (4) is constricted, together with the stent (2), and compressed to an initial position.
