A method and apparatus is provided for monitoring the environment within a microfluidic device (10). The microfluidic device (10) includes a body (12) defining a channel (20) for accommodating flow of fluid therethrough. A monitor structure (34, 34a) is disposed in the channel (20) of the body (12) in the flow of fluid. The monitor structure (34, 34a) changes color and/or dimension in response to various parameters of the fluid having predetermine d values.
