An optical information recording medium comprises a recording layer the optical characteristics of which vary reversibly when illuminated with a laser beam, a protective layer formed over the laser beam-illuminated surface of the recording layer, and an interface layer provided between the recording layer and protective layer. The protective layer contains at least Zn, S, and Si atoms. The atomic composition ratio of O to Si ranges from 0 to 2. The refractive index of the interface layer is smaller than that of the protective layer.
