A method of depolymerizing an aromatic polycarbonate which comprises reacting the aromatic polycarbonate with water, a C1-6 aliphatic alcohol, or a phenol optionally substituted by a C1-10 hydrocarbon group in a supercritical carbon dioxide fluid or reacting the polycarbonate with the supercritical fluid of either a C1-6 aliphatic alcohol or a phenol optionally substituted by a C1-10 hydrocarbon group. By this depolymerization method, an aromatic polycarbonate can be depolymerized at a high reaction rate and useful ingredients generated by the depolymerization can be recovered at a high percentage. Thus, useful ingredients can be recovered for recycling from an aromatic polycarbonate which has been discarded or spent.
