A method of controlling the acceleration of an engine capable of properly controlling an acceleration by accurately discriminating an acceleration state without adding any special sensor and mechanism for discrimination of the acceleration state and increasing a startability and an operability at a very slow rotational speed by preventing an acceleration at the time of start and at the very slow rotational speed from being erroneously determined, comprising the steps of, to detect the crank angle of the four-cycle engine, generating pulses in increments of specified crank angles, detecting the pulses, detecting an intake pressure in an intake passage on the downstream side of the throttle valve of the engine to determine the transition state of the engine, and controlling the acceleration based on the state of the engine, wherein the control of acceleration is prohibited when the state of the engine meets the requirements of the engine at the time of start or at the very slow rotational speed, and allowed when the state of the engine is other than those stated above.
