Production of electrically conducting nitride layers on chromium-containing metal alloys comprises converting the natural electrically non-conducting Cr2O3-passivating layer of the chromium-containing alloy into an electrically conducting chromium nitride layer in a plasma-chemical reaction using radicals produced in nitrogen-containing high pressure plasmas. Preferred Features: The metal alloy is an alloy based on iron, nickel or cobalt. The radicals are made from atomic nitrogen or amino radicals, especially NH2. The nitrogen-containing high pressure plasma is produced from a plasma gas containing nitrogen-hydrogen mixtures, ammonia, hydrazine or their mixtures. Further layers are applied on the chromium nitride layer using high pressure plasma deposition processes.
