An exhaust gas recirculation system for an engine comprises an EGR gas passage, connecting the intake and the exhaust passages to each other, and an EGR gas control valve arranged in the EGR gas passage for controlling the amount of the EGR gas flowing through the EGR gas passage. An opening of the EGR gas control valve is controlled in accordance with an output value. The output value is represented as a sum of a basic output value, corresponding to a target opening of the EGR gas control valve, a feedback correction coefficient, and a feedforward correction coefficient. When the target opening decreases below a first threshold, the feedforward correction coefficient is made zero to thereby stop the feedforward correction control. The feedforward correction control is resumed when the target opening increases to more than a second threshold.
