The device has a housing, an opening (38), at least one valve element (42) in the opening, a valve seat (46) and a flow chamber (80) formed between a wall of the opening and the valve element and forming part of the fuel flow path. The valve element has a control section (78) in the flow chamber region that interacts with a control section (82) of the opening so that a defined flow characteristic against time is achieved during axial movement of the valve element. Independent claims are also included for: (i) a fuel injection system; and (ii) an internal combustion engine with at least one combustion chamber.
