Increased drive current demand (IAn) is added to the auxiliary load (IKomp) giving the total instantaneous load current demand (ISoll). A mathematical model (1) calculates from this the current (IVer) required as a function of time which is then compared in comparator (4) with the existing load current (IGez) to give the additional current demand (e). From this a function block (2) assesses the current available thermal capacity (J) of components, e.g. catalytic burner, downstream of the cell from which function block (3) sets the operating level of the cell.
