Automated sequencer for parallel sequencing of a population of individual nucleic acids (I), immobilized on a flat surface, by sequential (cyclical) build-up of each complementary strand by using nucleotides (II) reversibly labeled with fluorescent dyes (III). The sequencer comprises: (i) an optical system (1) for generating signals from individual molecules; (ii) a detector (2) for fluorescent signals from individual (III) incorporated into the complementary strand; (iii) translation device (3) for moving a reaction platform when scanning the surface and for alternating between reaction platforms during the cycle stages; (iv) at least one reaction platform (4), on (3), for performing sequential reaction cycles; (v) a housing (5) for (1)-(3); (vi) an analyzer (6) for determining the sequence of (I), from the signals detected, and (vii) a controller that regulates the cycles on (4) and systems (1), (3) and (6).
