The invention relates to a process for producing strontium nitrate from the slime obtained as a result of a pickling operation of the apatite with nitric acid. The slime having a content of 10.3 ...1.1 % SrO is subjected to the extraction with hot water at a solid : liquid ratio of 1:1 ...1:4, for 30 ...90 min, at a temperature ranging from 40 to 85 degrees C. The resulting aqueous extract is acidified with concentrated nitric acid at a acid : extract ratio of 0.5 :1 .... 2:1. The separated crystals of strontium nitrite are washed with alcohol or are redissolved with concentrated nitric acid.
