The control uses control pistons arranged inside each other and moving slightly time-staggered through a control crankshaft which rotates at half the speed of the main crankshaft. The outer control piston which generally has the same diameter as the work piston, controls the change from outlet to inlet by covering or releasing the corresponding slits in the cylinder wall. The inner control piston closes the through slit for the required time or after the ignition timing and releases same with its upper piston edge. A third piston running in the second can function as a compensating piston.
