PURPOSE: An error recovery is provided to use a directory cache properly while a system is operated, and to correct an error of a disabled or a partially disabled directory cache through a separate service. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus includes the directory cache(396) storing at least one entry and a control unit(389). The control unit determines whether at least one uncorrectable error exists in the directory cache, and places the directory cache offline in response to the determination that the error is uncorrectable. A method includes the steps for detecting the error in data stored in a storage device in the system, determining whether the detected error is correctable, and making at least a portion of the storage device unavailable to one or more resources in the system in response to the determination that the error is uncorrectable.
