The invention relates to a gather-stitcher machine (15) for joining and assembling several magazine (10) sheet piles (16) and to a method for producing a header index for magazines which are assembled by means of said gather-stitcher machine (15). The aim of the invention is to automatically produce a header index for magazines (10) which have been joined by the gather-stitcher machine. The machine is provided with an edge punching device which is arranged behind a placement device in the direction in which the conveyor device (17) travels. Said edge punching device punches the piles of sheet (16) on the longitudinal edges thereof when said sheets have been put into place.
