A paper (22) mill assembly has a drying section (10) feeding an extended smoothing nip (12) interface formed by a shoe drum (14) facing a second pressing interface. Preferably 90 % of the drum mantle (14) diameter is positioned above the machine frame base line (16). The drying nip (12) is located under a second heated drum (18) with a relatively inflexible mantle as compared with the shoe drum. The shoe drum has an internal oil cooling system and is thermally insulated. An Independent claim is also included for a process to dry and smooth a paper or carton web in which the web is first dried to 60% preferably 70% and then fed through the extended smoothing nip. One part of the nip interface is heated and one is formed by an elastic e.g. polyurethane belt. The web residence period within the extended smoothing nip is 0.8 ms, followed by further drying.
