Production of a tube comprises: removing a length of tube (1) from a continuous glass strand; softening one of the ends of the tube length and applying a force in the axial direction until a tube forms and a first planar or slightly bent base (2) is produced; and softening the other end until small opening (3) is produced in a base (4). Preferred Features: Softening of the second open end is controlled. The process is automatic or continuous.
