A clay-containing mixture, which comprises a ground or powdered smectite or a rock containing the smectite. The mixture further contains a partially water-soluble or water-swellable linear chain acrylaminde type (co) polymer. The polymer having a molecular weight of at least 500.000, a hydrolysis degree of at most 30% and a particle size of 2µm to 1 mm. The mixture also contains 3-20% of water.
