A point-to-multipoint, fixed frame time division duplex communications system includes at least one hub (101) consisting of at least one modem and a plurality of directional sector antenna and a plurality of nodes (150,151 and 152), each having a highly directional antenna. The ratio of the forward and reverse portions of the frame, as well as the data density, is dynamically variable. They can be varied as a function of parameters obtained from the communications link between the hub and each node.
