Detector 12 in conjunction with computer 8 determines, from the position of the markers 21 on the scanning head 29, 30, the position and orientation of an x-ray imaging system with respect to a coordinate system 5, and also, using inclinometers 3, 6, the direction of the gravity vector with respect to the coordinate system. Distortions in the x-ray photographs due to mechanical deviations of the x-ray apparatus at any particular orientation of the scanning head can then be calculated and corrected in the photographs, particularly digitized photographs.
