A backpack sac is supported by a frame 2, 3, 4 that includes a load-spreading member 4 with wing portions extending symmetrically down and out beyond the edges of the back panel of the pack. The lower end of the frame is connected, to bear some of the pack load, to the center 10 of the pack hip belt 9 near the center bottom of the back panel by a flexible connector 8 which lies in a vertical plane. The central portion of the load spreading member 4 is pivotably connected to the back panel or the frame at the wearer's lumber dorsal pivot, or connected at the base of the back panel via a flexible connector or connectors, and the ends of the load spreading member are connected to the bottom of the back panel or sac by a flexible connector or connectors 6 which lie in a horizontal plane. Moreover, the ends of the load-spreading member are connected to the hip belt 9 at a second and third position 11 towards the hip belt ends at a predetermined distance from the center of the hip belt by flexible connectors 7, which lie in a plane between the horizontal, and the vertical.
